    Politically Correct Information Adoption

    Get PDF
This paper analyses the case when the political struggle not is channeled through policy choices, but through what information to adopt. The paper presents a simple model to analyze collective decisions of adopting new information when different parties' payoffs are contingent upon the new information. In equilibrium we demonstrate that the adopted information is biased towards “political correctness” rather than being informative (in the Blackwell sense). These results may be relevant when designing decision mechanisms for institutions that are to be keen on new information.Informativeness; Majority Rule; Political Correctness

The Computer Generation's Willingness to Pay for Originals when Pirates are Present – A CV study

    Get PDF
A contingent valuation method is applied to study subjects' willingness to pay for originals when illegal copies are freely available. The subjects consisted of 234 Swedish undergraduate students from the "computer generation". Only 2% of the "normal" (and 0% of the "elite") students were willing to pay the retail price for the original. However, the majority was prepared to pay a non-negligible amount for the original. Demand curves and profit maximizing behaviors are analyzed. The price elasticity of piracy indicates that piracy is insensitive to price cuts. The results have implications for the calculation of damages of piracy.Piracy; Contingent Valuation; Damages; Software

What’s in a Name? - An ethnical discrimination experiment

    Get PDF
This paper presents the results from an ethnical discrimination experiment that was conducted in one of Sweden’s most “problematic” cities with respect to the integration process of refugees. The subjects confronted three different bargaining games; one trust game, one social exclusion and coalition formation game; and one battle of the sexes game. No general discrimination effect was detected. However, one specific effect was that Non-Swedes were less likely to be chosen as bargaining partners in the coalition formation game. Another specific effect was found in the males’ trust and ultimatum responses; Non-Swedes had higher returns on being generous compared to Swedes.bargaining; ethnical discrimination; experiments

Stereotypes, Sex Discrimination and Paranoia - an experimental study

    Get PDF
We analyze results from two categories of experiments where the subjects received controlled signals about the sex of their co-players. In a series of Battle of the Sexes experiments the subjects played more hawkish against women than against men. The impact of the sex signal was most pronounced among female subjects. In the second category of experiments we develop a measure of discrimination effects. We then survey discrimination effects across 32 subject groups from Israel, Sweden, UK and USA. The results indicate discrimination against females in experimental bargaining. This discrimination behavior is significant among females but not among males.Sex discrimination; gender differences; bargaining; experiments; coordination

    Induced activation in accelerator components

    Get PDF
The residual activity induced in particle accelerators is a serious issue from the point of view of radiation safety as the long-lived radionuclides produced by fast or moderated neutrons and impact protons cause problems of radiation exposure for staff involved in the maintenance work and when decommissioning the facility. This paper presents activation studies of the magnets and collimators in the High Energy Beam Transport line of the European Spallation Source due to the backscattered neutrons from the target and also due to the direct proton interactions and their secondaries. An estimate of the radionuclide inventory and induced activation are predicted using the GEANT4 code

DNA Coated Nanoparticle Eight-mers as Programmable Self-Assembly Building Blocks

    Get PDF
Abstract. Nanoparticles coated with single stranded DNA have been shown to efficiently hybridize to targets of complementary DNA. This property might be used to implement programmable (or algorithmic-) self-assembly to build nanoparticle structures. However, we argue that a DNA coated nanoparticle by itself cannot be used as a programmable self-assembly building block since it does not have directed bonds. A general scheme for assembling and purifying nanoparticle eight-mers with eight geometrically well-directed bonds is presented together with some preliminary experimental work
